Brass is set in 18th century Lancashire at the beginning of what would eventually be called the Industrial Revolution. It starts at the beginning of the Canal Age and ends after the development of railways. Players take the roles of entrepreneurs attempting to make the most money from the various industries of the time. Cotton dominates the game but players ignore the other industries such as coal mining and engineering at their peril.

While the rules have been rewritten for clarification in this 2nd printing, game play has not changed.

Note: This is now reimplemented as Brass: Lancashire and Brass: Birmingham.

In Brass the players represent industrialists in northern England during the heyday of the industrial revolution. Each player needs to build an economic engine that surpasses the other by the time railways are established and the foreign markets have been saturated with English cotton.

The goal of the game is to have the most points at the end of the game. These are obtained in three ways:

1) Building industries and having them successfully utilized
2) Building canal or rail connections to cities that have many successfully utilized industries
3) Money at the end of the game
